Chia Seeds Weight Loss

It is relatively easy to lose weight once you start using chia seeds. Many people find it happens naturally once they start using chia seeds regularly, but it is more effective if you understand how to use chia seeds for weight loss.

Chia seeds have been called a dieter’s dream. This is because they act as a natural appetite suppressant, but unlike many chemical appetite suppressants, which can have unpleasant side effects, these seeds are a nutritionally dense food and a healthy addition to anyone’s diet. They are also cheaper than appetite suppressants and meal replacement regimes.

Using chia seeds for weight loss can allow you to lose weight without hunger, give you all the health benefits of chia seeds and give you more energy while you lose weight. The gentle cleansing effect of chia seeds on your colon can also give you a noticeably flatter belly within days. To use chia seeds for weight loss you will be taking advantage of four of the properties of chia seeds.

One is their ability to swell by up to 12 times their size when added to liquid. This makes you feel full quickly and you will want to eat less

The second is the nutritionally dense properties of chia seeds. You will be adding protein, calcium, b vitamins, folate, iron, antioxidants, omega 3 fats and other necessary nutrients to your diet with only a small calorie content. This will cut down on cravings.

The third property of chia seeds that helps with weight loss is that it digests slowly. This makes you feel full for longer and gives a slow release of energy. This will help prevent lack of energy often associated with dieting,

The fourth property is the increase in energy that most people feel when adding these seeds to their diet. You will feel more energetic, which will make it easier to add a half hour walk or other exercise to your daily routine. You may have to stop yourself skipping or dancing down the street.

How to lose weight with chia seeds – quick tips

I have found that having whole chia seeds are more filling and keeps you feeling full for longer than if you use ground chia seeds .

Sipping chia fresca during the day can substantially reduce your appetite, especially in hot weather.

Substitute chia fresca for sodas and other sugary drinks. – so much healthier and more refreshing

If you have not used chia seeds before, start slowly by using one teaspoon to one dessert spoon per day for a few days. This makes sure that you do not have any adverse reactions to this food. As always, remember it is advisable to visit your doctor before starting any weight loss program.

Is it better to hydrate the Chia seeds to help with weight loss, or add them dry to a drink, mix and drink down.

    • admin says:

I have tried both ways Phyllis, and it makes little or no difference to the feeling of fullness. However, I think that for a long term effect, it’s best of have them in a way that you enjoy. That’s why it’s good to use the recipes, which mainly hydrate the seeds, and find a couple of great ones you enjoy.

I just purchased chia seeds and wanted to know how to use it as a drink with water and also any juicing recipe?

    Thanks so much

    • admin says:

Hi Silvia. It’s simple, just stir in a teaspoon or two of chia seeds to your water and drink it straight away. Likewise, just stir in chia seeds to your favorite juice recipe. Don’t let your water or juice stand, or the seeds will tend to settle out. Enjoy.

  4. Itzel says:

Would it be okay if I just swallow a table spoon of the seeds than right after drink a glass of water? Or do I have to actually put them in water & wait?

    • admin says:

It’s fine to do that Itzel, but it is not a very appetizing way to have chia seeds. That’s why I put together some easy recipes — to make eating chia seeds a pleasurable experience, as well as being super healthy.

Hi…I just wanna ask if it is safe for me to eat chia seed.. I under go to a surgery because of gallstone a year ago.

    • admin says:

Any medical question like this should be put to your own doctor, but, I will say that I know of several people who have had gall bladder surgery who eat chia seeds regularly with no ill effects, only beneficial ones.

THIS IS A FANTASTIC WAY TO EAR CHIA SEEDS ON A COLD WINTERS MORNING!

    Grain-Free Hot Cereal
    Yield: Serves 1
    Ingredients
    2 tbsp chia seed
    2 tbsp flax seed meal
2 tsp erythritol (I used Swerve Sweetener)
    1/3 cup hot water
    2 tbsp heavy cream (optional)
    2 tbsp nut butter (optional)
    Berries (optional)
    Instructions
In a small bowl, stir together chia seed, flax seed meal, and erythritol.
Add hot water, stir and let sit for 2-3 minutes.
Stir in cream, nut butter, berries, raisins, chopped nuts…whatever floats your boat.
    Notes
Serves 1. Each serving (without optional stir-ins) has a total of 18 g of carbs and 18 g of fiber. Whoa, that’s a lot of fiber! Total NET CARBS = 0 g.

I had sleeve surgery bariatric, can I eat chia after 2 months if they are really plump from fluids thanks

    • admin says:

Although chia seeds are very soft and easily digested when fully soaked, it is best to discuss this with your doctor since you have had a stomach operation.

  8. Alicia says:

I recently had gastric sleeve surgery. My office decided they’d substitute their breakfast & start drinking smoothies w/ me in the morning. One co-worker brought chia seeds, is this something I can have? Is there a recommended dose for someone that has has gastric sleeve?

    • admin says:

Sorry Alicia, I don’t know the answer to your question. Eating chia seeds after gastric sleeve surgery is something you should discuss with your doctors. Adding chia seeds to a smoothie can make you feel very full.

  9. DeeDee says:

Thank you for the helpful information. I hope I’m not asking a repeated question.
I just bought Bob’s Red Mill chia seeds. I’m going to add 2 tablespoons to a banana mango smoothie with Greek yogurt and orange juice. Can I blend the seeds in the blender or mix the seeds in after the smoothie is made. Also, if I mix the seeds in the blender can I drink immediately?

When is it appropriate to gel the seeds or use immediately?
Is it possible if you could to swallow the seeds whole followed by a glass of liquid?

Is there any possibility that too much chia seeds could block your intestines like which I have read that psyllium husk has done?

A lot of questions but if you don’t mind, please help me understand. Thanks so much!

    • admin says:

You can blend the seeds in the blender DeeDee or add them to your smoothie at the end. You can drink the mixture immediately or wait for it to gel. Do what appeals to your own taste, there are no “rules”. I do think that if you drink your smoothie immediately after making it, you will feel fuller. It is unwise to take too much of any food. The experts recommend 1 to 2 tablespoons of chia seeds added to you daily diet for health purposes and 2 to 4 tablespoons per day for help with weight loss. Chia seed consumption can lead to constipation, therefore, it is wise to have extra liquid when you have chia seeds in any recipe.

  11. Beverley says:

    Hi there

can chia seeds be taken when pregnant?
    is it safe ?

    • admin says:

Hi Beverley. Chia seeds are not a supplement or a herb. They have been classified as a food and a wonderfully nutritious one at that. A pure nutritious food is safe to take when pregnant. One or two tablespoons per day is plenty. Remember to drink plenty of fluids.

Awesome website! I take 2000-3000 mg of Garcinia Cambogia HCA 70% powder.
Just wondering if you knew of any problems with taking chia seeds with HCA?

    • admin says:

I know of no problems in taking chia seeds with HCA Bo. Chia seeds are classed as a food by the FDA, not a supplement.

  13. Carol says:

I wonder if you can tell me the following… the benefits of using milled vs whole chia seeds in smoothies. Also, I have been using hemp protien ( 3tbs) with 1-2 tbls of whole chia in almond milk for breakfast. I am interested in losing weight, and wonder if using the hemp protien will help or hinder the process. Also, should I cut down to 1 tbls of chia?

    • admin says:

There is no nutritional advantage to be gained in using milled chia seeds instead of whole Carol. There could be a slight difference in the consistency of your smoothie. The hemp protein should not make any difference in your weight loss plans. To lose weight, its best to use 3 to 4 tablespoons of chia seed over the course of the day. Many people find that 2 tablespoons of chia at breakfast is a good way to start the day when losing weight – no need to change unless you want to experiment to find out what suits you best.
